Is it safe for human consuption?
This report claims Chromimu picolinate is completely safe for the human body (1)
I could not find any report that showed any harm by Chromium picolinate, some indicated poblems, but did not provide documentation. Very reputable labs have done double blind studies using up to 1,000mcg a day many claiming no problems.

Chromium Picolate and Dibetes - There is an overwhelming amount of reports on the internet claiming Chromium Picolate reduces diabetes do your own search and make your own conclusions. For me I have been taking 500mcg ea morning and will now add another 500mcg ea evening as well as resume biotin.

1. One of these studies, a 1997 study involving 180 type II diabetes patients in China, is a classic: it documented “spectacular” results in diabetes patients who took 500 mcg chromium picolinate twice daily. After four months, nearly all of the diabetes patients no longer had traditional signs of diabetes. Their blood sugar and insulin levels dropped to near normal—something that medications could not achieve. Even more importantly, the “gold standard” diagnostic measure of diabetes—blood levels of hemoglobin A1c (sugar-damaged proteins that age cells)—also dropped to normal.[ii] A follow-up study by some of the same researchers monitored 833 type II diabetes patients who took 500 mcg chromium picolinate twice daily: a significant reduction in fasting blood sugar levels and in post-meal blood sugar levels was found during the ten months of the study. No negative side effects were shown from taking the supplements. In addition, more than 85 percent of the patients reported improvements in the common diabetic symptoms of excessive thirst, frequent urination and fatigue.[iii] (2)

2. The 1000-mcg group members lowered blood sugar levels, improved glucose tolerance, reduced insulin, and moderated total cholesterol significantly after only two months of supplementation. They also improved 'glycated haemoglobin', often considered the best indicator of blood-glucose status, in just eight weeks. The 200-mcg group made fewer improvements but were able to ameliorate glycated haemoglobin after four months and dip insulin after only two months ('Beneficial Effects of Chromium for People with Type II Diabetes,' Diabetes, vol. 45, p. 124A, abstract no. 454, 1996). In effect, the chromium supplements, especially at a level of 1000 mcg per day, helped to control many of the pernicious problems associated with diabetes..

Anderson cautioned that American and British diabetics might need higher levels of chromium to obtain similar results, since Americans and Brits tend to have bigger bodies and also eat more sugar and fat, factors which raise chromium requirements. Nonetheless, the results of this research were so notable that the rather conservative American Diabetic Association issued a news release heralding Anderson's work as a significant breakthrough..(3)

3. The analysis confirms that chromium picolinate is effective in improving glycemic control and normalizing lipid levels in people with type 2 diabetes.(4)

4. " C. Leigh Broadhurst and Domenico reviewed data from fifteen studies (14 focused in type-2 diabetes) with a total of 1,690 subjects, including 1,505 receiving chromium picolinate. Doses ranged from 200-1000 micrograms of chromium per day and supplementation periods ranged from one week to nine months." (5)

5. The difference between the treatment and placebo groups was significant. On average those in treatment dropped from a fructosamine level of 377 to 353. But those in the placebo group got worse, going from 342 to 355. (They also used biotin achieving a remarkable 24 point drop in only three weeks-the amounts are not listed in this report of the study) (6)
