The purpose of this site is to collect lab research by medical doctors about herbs that are proven to treat illnesses and counter the false attacks on herbs by the medical industry and false claims by alternative medicine. I let the science tell the facts.

Andrographis Date Written 2007
Author By Joe Holmes Date Revised June 13, 2009

The Research reports below shows Andrographis is effective in:

  • Reducing liver, brest and colon cancer
  • Reducing oxidative stress by increasing kappa b. and increasing antioxidants
  • Bosts the immune system
  • Treatment for colds
  • Antibiotic properties
  • Antifungal properties
  • HIV treatment
  • Treat lung inflamation
  • Strong anti-inflammatory activity
  • Inhibit the expression of Epstein-Barr virus

1. Although we don't know how andrographis might work for colds, preliminary evidence suggests that it might stimulate immunity,2 potentially making it useful for general immune support. (1)

2. "Sndrographis paniculata is a herbaceous plant in the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka. It is widely cultivated in southern Asia, where it is used to treat infections and some diseases, often being used before antibiotics were created. Mostly the leaves and roots were used for medicinal purposes.", "The plant extract exhibits antityphoid and antifungal activities. Kalmegh is also reported to possess antihepatotoxic, antibiotic, antimalarial, antihepatitic, antithrombogenic, antiinflammatory, antisnakevenom, and antipyretic properties to mention a few, besides its general use as an immunostimulant agent. A recent study conducted at Bastyr University, confirms anti-HIV activity of andrographolide."(2)

3. "Our results indicated that the anti-inflammatory properties of these plant extracts might be resulted from the inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators (e.g., NO and PGE(2)), at least in part via suppression of a signaling pathway such as NF-kappaB. Collectively, we have found that three potent bioactive TCMH species exerted significant NF-kappaB inhibitory activity and acted in a cell type dependent fashion". (3)

4. "has been shown to possess a strong anti-inflammatory activity...These results provide evidence that andrographolide is an effective anti-inflammatory drug that is active in vitro and in vivo, and affects both non-specific as well as antigen/antibody-dependent lung inflammation. Thus, andrographolide has the potential to be used in a variety of inflammatory conditions, including allergic lung inflammation." (4)

5.The results suggest that ANDRO may be effective in combination with 5-FU (drug in the treatment of cancer.(5)) for the treatment of HCC cells (cancer of the liver.(6)) SMMC-7721.(Cancer of the liver) (7)

"andrographolide, a bioactive compound in EEAP, effectively inhibit the expression of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) lytic proteins," (8)

7."...concentration of andrographolide and aqueous extract from A. paniculata supplement decreased oxidative stress in lymphocytes with the fall in superoxide anion generation, lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, DNA fragmentation and rise in cell viability and the activities of the antioxidant enzymes; SOD and GSH. The above findings indicate that A. paniculata products modulate the nicotine induced toxicity in lymphocytes through decreased superoxide mediated oxidative stress and DNA fragmentation. Hence, A. paniculata can be used as therapeutic means against nicotine mediated lymphocytes function." (9)

8. "Cumulative urinary excretion of AP and DIAP in 24h after oral administration of the extract was 0.88% and 1.61% of oral dose administered, respectively. The extract showed significant reduction (p<0.05) (5% (11)) of MDA levels (oxidation levels) and elevation of total antioxidant status in rat urine samples collected in 24 after oral administration." (10)

9. "exhibited growth inhibition and cytotoxicity in MCF-7 (breast) and HCT-116 (colon) cancer cells...The new benzylidene derivatives of andrographolide are potential anticancer agents." (12) (Inhibits growth of brest and colon cancer)

10."Therefore, these plant-derived compounds may play a role in the prevention and/or management of cancer." (13)
